Making Money online DAY 4

October 11, 2011, by masterkey No comments yet

Day 4: Guess who…

Remember that childhood game guess who? Where you have to guess what character your opponent has chosen by asking questions about them. We are playing the marketing version of this game today, and I will take you through how I apply this technique to bestfootballgoals.info.

Once we’ve played Guess Who IM we then need to play IM Snap and match these to a monetization method. We will look at how we can make money, and then start to apply this.

After all this we will look at the easiest way to get started with these on our site. This will be in part 2 which follow in an hour or two…

Guess Who IM Edition

Yeah I know the name sucks, but that is basically the game you are playing here. I have a list of 10 questions that I personally use when looking at a new site, and this is the first (and probably only) time I will reveal it.

 1. What is the Subject/Niche of the site?
 2. Does it attract a majority of Male or Female readers?
 3. What is the estimated age range of my readers?
 4. Will my usual reader have a Credit Card?
 5. Will my usual reader have a PayPal account?
 6. Do I expect the majority my readers to have their own computer, or use a public computer?
 7. What other interests are commonly linked to my Subject/Niche?
 8. What social networks do I expect my readers to belong to?
 9. How do I expect my readers to find my site?
 10. Does the user have a specific pain or problem we may be able to solve?

After answering these questions I usually have a good profile of the people I expect to be using my site. You have not got write essay answers and brainstorming/mindmapping is totally appropiate here. For the profile of bestfootballgoals.info see the video or download the file here.

Snap IM

The next stage is to use our target profile to match what we are going to be able to do “help” our users. One of the biggest problems I find here is that since the Made For Adsense period (where you wanted your site looking ugly so people left it as quickly as possible by clicking an adsense link) quality seems to be at the back of most people’s mind. It’s ok to make a quick buck occasionally, but that is not what we are doing here!

It’s easier to get your users to do the advertising for you, than to spend days doing SEO. Because of this I invest heavily in content for all my sites, not just keyword targeted but aimed at giving something important to the user… Once you do that the user actually starts to trust your website for delivering what you promise, may tell friends about what they’ve found etc.

It is at this stage we moneytize that user, not by selling them the answer to the question they asked to get to our site… But instead by upselling them into something related. For example for bestfootballgoals.info depending on the profile of our user we can upsell them a goal scoring training program, a football betting system, football ringtones, football screensavers…

The posibilities are endless, generally the only time any of my sites will show adsense is if I have nothing better (aka more profitable) to show the user.

Lets make a list of things we think the user may be interested in for bestfootballgoals…

 • Live football streaming
 • Football betting strageties
 • Football training guides
 • Football screensavers/backgrounds for phones
 • Football books and DVD’s
 • Football Merchandise

Making Money online DAY 1

Day 1: WordPress setup and housekeeping

Just like when you have a party, setup and making things look pretty is crucial to making money online as well (well I think so neways). So that is where we will start, once we have this done we have a solid foundation to build from.

By the end of todays task you will have:

 • WordPress set up and configured
 • WordPress Themes and Plug-ins configured
 • Your About Page
 • Your Privacy Policy

WordPress Setup and Configuration

Sometimes it pays to be lazy, and most decent webhosts using cPanel will also supply you with Fantastico which does a great job of taking care of the technical side of things for you. The steps to take are basically as follow:

 1. Log into cPanel
 2. Create a new email account that you will use for your new site, I created info@websitedeveloper.com.ph
 3. Use Fantastico De Luxe to install WordPress
 4. Log into the new wordpress installation
 5. Update WordPress to the latest automatically
 6. Change the Settings to make sure that everyone that visits our websites visits www.websitedeveloper.com.ph
 7. and not websitedeveloper.com.ph This makes sure that Google will not give us a penalty for having duplicate content as these two different versions of our website address appear as different websites…

To view how to do these steps, please watch this video.

Configure WordPress Theme’s and Plugins

One of the most effective changes you can make is to make your blog look different from everyone else’s. There are thousands of theme’s avaliable for wordpress, and tons of plugins that can enhance functionality. Here is my basic set-up.

 1. Click on Themes and then Install Theme
 2. Search for a theme either by the niche you are targeting, or by it’s colour scheme etc
 3. When you find a theme you like, click install and activate.
 4. Now goto the Plugin’s section, click Add New
 5. Enter “All In One SEO” and click search, find the “All In One SEO Pack” plugin in the list and click Install Now then Activate
 6. Once activated a red bar will show, click config now.
 7. Set the Plugin to Enabled, enter a title, description and add a few keywords (we will change these later so do not worry too much) and click Update Options.

 8. In the Settings menu on the left click Permalinks and set it to Month and Title (lets us get keywords into the URL which is good for Google)
 9. Goto the Settings->Privacy page and make sure that it is set to be visible to everyone.
 10. Goto the Settings->Discussions page and change the Default Avatar to be anything but Mystery Man (I like MonsterID)
 11. Goto the Settings->Reading page and set it to show 5 posts per page, and to only include the summary in the RSS feed (this makes it harder for people to steal your content)
 12. Go back to the Plugins Page, click Add New and search for “Sharedaddy”, click install now, and activate it.
 13. Goto the settings page for Sharedaddy and drag and drop all the options on the grey “active” box. Click the down arrow on the facebook button and change it to show the “Like Button”. Set it to open in a New Window and click Save Settings.
 14. Now delete the default Post
 15. Add some catergories using keywords related to your niche
 16. Delete the default page

To follow this step-by-step please watch the video below.

Your About Page

The most basic thing in the world is an about page yet I see so many people getting this wrong. Simply write around 500 words on what your website is about and why people should use it. Personalise it and tell people why you started it and how important the topic is to you…

This video shows the creation of our About page in super-fast forward mode.

Your Privacy Policy

Another thing that a lot of people miss or forget to do is add a Privacy Policy. The first part of this is extremely simple, however the second part may be slightly more confusing.

 1. Goto the plugins page, and click Add New.
 2. Enter ”Exclude Pages” and click search. Find it in the list, click Install Now, click Ok and then Activate Plugin.
 3. Now click Add New, enter “Easy Privacy Policy” and click search. Find it in the list, click Install Now, click OK and then Activate Plugin.
 4. Click Settings->Privacy Policy, review the text, untick the “Include a credit link for the Easy Privacy Plugin (thanks)” box at the bottom and then click “Create Policy Page”. Keep the default page address.
 5. Now click Pages on the menu, click Edit on the Privacy Policy page, and untick the “Include this page on page lists” box on the bottom right. Click Update.
 6. Goto Appearance on the menu and click Editor, in the list that appears on the right click footer.
 7. Now you want to look for “
” in this file. Copy and paste the code below right after this before anything else.

Privacy Policy
If you get stuck feel free to message me. Today’s last video demonstrates this…
